Telkwa Coal

We have concerns about the potential impacts that Allegiance Coal’s proposed Telkwa Coal mine would have on the Morice-Bulkley River system. Telkwa Coal is a proposed metallurgical coal mine. The project has not yet submitted an application to the BC Environmental Assessment Office but we have been participating in engagements to date and are monitoring their progress as they expect to seek approval in 2018.

You may recall that the previous owners of Telkwa Coal decided to not proceed with the mine in 2000. It is now under the ownership of Australian company, Allegiance Coal, who have been actively pursuing development of the mine since 2016. For a history of the mine proposal, please see the chronology below.

Public Comment Period Now Open (June 8th - July 23rd, 2020)

The Telkwa Coal Mine, known as the Tenas Project, is moving ahead in the environmental assessment process. The draft Application Information Requirements (AIR) are now up on the Environmental Assessment Office’s website. The AIR is what tells the proponent, Telkwa Coal Ltd, what studies need to be done before filing their project application so it is important to review the requirements and let the government know if there are gaps and other research you think the proponent should be doing.

The public comment period on the AIR is from June 8th to July 23rd and the Environmental Assessment Office will be holding two online Open Houses on June 17th from 1:00 - 3:00 and June 23rd from 5:00 – 7:00Click here for more information on how to join the virtual Open Houses and how to submit a comment. You can click on the links there to join one of the Open Houses or to submit comments.

Don’t miss this opportunity to have input into the environmental assessment of the Telkwa Coal Mine.
